Cenote Diving, Yucatan Peninsula

Unique geological conditions created a unique series of underwater caverns and caves in the Yucatan Peninsula. Cenotes, as they are called in Mexico, are underground caverns, tunnels and caves filled with fresh water. The cenotes have beautiful geologic features such as stalagmites, stalactites, columns and more. Cenotes are accessible via sink holes. Dive companies with knowledgeable guides are available throughout the Yucatan.

Cenote diving is a must for avid divers. These sacred sinkholes, were sacred to the Mayan Indians as the cenotes were their access to fresh water. The cenote were considered entrances to the underworld as well as the after life. Artifacts from Maya are occasionally still found in some cenotes.

Experienced divers have been exploring the cenotes for over twenty years and have mapped over three hundred miles of amazing underwater caverns, tunnels, passageways in this extraordinary eco-system.

Special dive certification is required for cave diving, however basic dive certification is  all that is require to dive in the cenotes.  Divers follow tunnels illuminated  by the sun. If you are diver planning to visit the Mayan Riviera you will not want to miss this unique dive attraction.
