Coyoacan, Mexico City - Folk Art, Music, Dance

Art lovers will want to take time to swing by Coyoacan, one of the sixteen barrios that comprise Mexico City. This a historic barrio was once a village but as Mexico city grew it was incorporated. This charming barrio is laid out in a Spanish colonial fashion with plazas, gardens and narrow streets.

Coyoacan is popular with students, artists, musicians and bohemian types. Visitors will find open air cafes, bookshops, pubs, museums and two large plazas where on the weekends you will find open-air markets filled with arts and crafts. With a bit of searching and  negotiations you should be able to find some interesting items to bring home. Depending on then day you are like to find impromptu dance performances, drumming, fortune tellers, and more.  Be sure to wander around the side streets where you may find antiques, folk art and other non tacky treasures.

Museo Nacional de las Culturas Populares, the National Museum of Popular Culture features displays from the different cultures of Mexico. It is a celebration of folk art and music and more. Checkout the gift shop which has folk art, books and music from all over Mexico.

The Museo Frida Kahlo, is located in Coyoacan and is housed in a walled indigo blue hacienda that was her home during the last years of her life. The museum features small galleries as well as a historical section which has been preserved from the days when Kahlo call La Casa Azul her home.

Museo Diego Rivera-Anahuacalli, is dedicated to art created by the muralist Diego Rivera as well as to display his collection of pre-Columbian art. Housed in an impressive neo-Aztec structure, the museum is parklike and is a wildlife refuge. There is also a small venue where you can see art, music, and dance events.

Museo Leon Trotsky, seems a bit odd to find Marxist theorist Leon Trotsky museum in Mexico but Coyoacan was where he lived after being booted out of the Soviet Union in 1936. The museum has preserves his home as it was  until his last days.
