Riviera Nayarit: San Blas to Punta Mita

The Riviera Nayarit is located along a hundred mile stretch of Pacific coast in Mexico. It begins in the sleepy fishing village of San Blas, runs through the surf town of Sayulita and ends at chic Punta Mita. Once upon a time, this area was only known to surfers, hippies and fishermen.

Now days these little towns are home to luxury resorts, boutique hotels and trendy restaurants. There is still great surfing, fishing and diving but the prices have gone up as the area has become more mainstream.

Accommodations in Punta Mita run the gambit from the luxurious Four Seasons to the boutique hotels such as Hotel Cinco a hip little hotel catering to the surf and yoga crowd looking for an unpretentious yet refined atmosphere.

If you plan on visiting the area over Chirstmas, check out the Festival de Arte in the town of San Pancho from December 28–30. Artists from around the world gather in this little town to party down.

Consider visiting Sayulita, a surf town located smack dab in the middle of the Riviera Nayarit, in March when world class longboarders and standup paddlers show up to compete at the annual surf contest.

Further north just outside of the town of San Blas, you can explore the mangrove swamps on daily boat tours or surf the day away at Matanchen Bay. There is also an interesting old Spanish fortress in ruins just east of the city of San Blas.
