Xochimilco - Mexico City, Mexico
Modern day Mexico City was established by the Spanish conquistadors. The city grew out of the ruins and ancient Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. Today, Mexico City is one of the biggest cities on the planet. It is a culturally rich city with numerous Aztec ruins, a rich colonial history that produced some of the finest structure in the new world including the cathedral on the central plaza as well as the Palacio de las Bellas Artes.
Xochimilco, a UNESCO world heritage site, is south of Mexico City. It consist of a series of canals and man made islands, create by the Aztec people. The Aztec build Tenochtitlan on an island in the middle of what was a lake and Xochimilco is the Aztec answer to development upon the lake. You can hire boats to take you through the canals where you will encounter buildings from the 16th century. The area is exceptionally well preserved.
