Alamos, Mexico - An Unknown Colonial Gem

If you are looking to explore a road less traveled in Mexico, consider  visiting the colonial town of Alamos in Sonora, Mexico. You will not find this town on tourist maps and most like will never meet anyone that has been there but that should not detour you visiting.

Alamos has a storied history that goes back to to the time before the Spanish arrival in Mexico. For hundreds of years there was a thriving Indian community. When the Spanish arrived the quest for precious metals brought the Spanish to the area but instead of finding gold they found silver. The wealth from the silver spawned development. During, Mexico's colonial period, this town was one of the wealthiest in Mexico. When the silver mines were depleted, the area went into decline for about one hundred years before being found by snowbirds from Canada and the USA.

The Mexican government declared the village of Alamos a national treasure but has not really promoted the area for tourism. You will find no resorts but there are a few beautiful boutique hotels, delicious, authentic Mexico food and surprisingly good shopping.

This is not the place to go if you are looking for big entertainment, fancy hotels and a resort like atmosphere. This is the perfect place to go if you are looking to discover the authentic Mexico. Bring a book to read on the porch of your hotel, go to the plaza in the center of town and watch the couples walk around the square, enjoy an amazing meal and watch the sunset over the Sonoran mountains.
